Muan International Airport, an international airport in South Korea
Muan International Airport is an airport serving Muan County in South Jeolla Province with both domestic and international flights. The facility features separate terminals, one main concrete runway approximately 3,000 meters long, straightforward check-in counters, waiting areas, shops, and cafes designed for easy passenger flow and navigation.
Construction began in 1997 and the airport opened in 2007, replacing the nearby older Mokpo Airport as a regional travel hub. Over the years, passenger numbers and flight frequencies grew steadily, increasing the airport's importance for connecting the surrounding region to other parts of the country and Asia.
The airport takes its name from Muan County in South Jeolla Province, reflecting its role as a gateway for the region. Visitors experience straightforward signage in Korean and English, and staff interact with travelers in a calm and helpful manner throughout the facility.
The airport provides parking areas close to the terminals clearly marked with signs for easy access. The straightforward layout makes it simple for travelers to find their way, and services include car rentals, small shops, and comfortable waiting areas.
In December 2024, a serious accident occurred when a Jeju Air flight overran the runway during landing and struck a concrete embankment at the end, resulting in significant loss of life. Following the incident, the airport underwent safety inspections and later reopened with emergency and training flights resuming in early 2025.
