Bennett Island, Arctic island in Sakha Republic, Russia
Bennett Island is an Arctic island located in the East Siberian Sea within the Sakha Republic. The terrain is rocky and heavily covered with ice, snow, and several large glaciers.
The island was discovered in 1881 by American explorer George W. De Long during his Arctic expedition aboard USS Jeannette. He named it after financier James Gordon Bennett Jr., who supported the exploration.
The island sits within the territory of Sakha Republic, where indigenous communities maintain connections to their ancestral Arctic maritime traditions.
Reaching the island requires specialized icebreaker ships due to its remote Arctic location and ice-covered waters. Visitors need prior authorization from Russian authorities before attempting any approach.
Since the 1980s, mysterious gas plumes have been observed rising from the ground across the island. These emissions suggest underground hydrothermal or geothermal activity that continues to puzzle scientists.
