Nanyang Technological University, Research university in Western Water Catchment, Singapore
Nanyang Technological University is a research and teaching institution in the West Region of Singapore, spread across several faculties and facilities. The site extends over a wide area with laboratories, student housing, and green spaces that lie between the buildings.
The institution was founded in 1991 from the merger of two educational institutes and has since developed into a center for technical and scientific research. In the following decades it grew steadily and expanded its facilities with new fields of study.
The complex takes its name from the Chinese term for the southern seas and hosts students from across the world who live and work together here. The library is built as a walkable spiral, so visitors move upward through floors while looking out through the glass facade.
The site is accessible via two metro stations and several bus lines that connect the complex to the rest of the city. Most areas are open during the day, while some buildings can only be entered with permission.
The medical faculty works closely with a British institution and brings European teaching methods into Asian education. Some buildings on the site were designed by known architects and are worth seeing as structures themselves.
