Tanjong Pagar, Historic district in Downtown Core, Singapore

Tanjong Pagar is a downtown neighborhood in Singapore that mixes low-rise merchant houses from the 1800s with modern high-rise buildings, including the Guoco Tower as the city's tallest structure. The streets show this contrast clearly, with carefully preserved old facades standing beside smooth contemporary buildings.

The area started as a fishing village called Salinter and transformed into a major port zone after the Tanjong Pagar Dock Company was established in 1864. This shift brought economic activity and drew workers and merchants to the location.

The Thian Hock Keng Temple displays traditional Hokkien architectural craftsmanship and remains an active center of spiritual practice for the local community. Walking through its halls, you notice how daily worship coexists naturally with the bustling neighborhood around it.

The neighborhood is well-served by public transport connections and offers dining and drinking options ranging from Korean restaurants to cocktail bars. The area is pedestrian-friendly, and you'll find fitness centers and shops scattered throughout if you plan to spend time here.

The Pinnacle@Duxton residential complex features seven towers connected by elevated sky bridges that allow residents and visitors to walk between buildings and take in city views. This bridge system is uncommon for a residential building and creates a spatial connection rarely seen in the district.
