Telok Blangah, Singapore, Residential district in Bukit Merah, Singapore
Telok Blangah is a residential neighborhood in Bukit Merah positioned between Pasir Panjang and Tanjong Pagar, combining apartment blocks and shop houses. The area overlooks Keppel Harbour and blends high-rise developments with lower-density older structures throughout.
The area gained early prominence when Sir Stamford Raffles granted land to Temenggong Abdul Rahman for residential use and a cemetery. These initial allocations laid the foundation for its development as a residential zone.
Two century-old Chinese temples, Ban Siew San Kuan Imm Tong and Koon Seng Ting, stand as reminders of religious life among Chinese settlers. These shrines remain active gathering places where daily rituals and seasonal celebrations continue to shape the neighborhood's character.
The neighborhood is well served by public transport connections linking various sections with easy access throughout. Morning and late afternoon visits offer the most comfortable experience for walking and exploring the area.
Within this neighborhood stands a sacred shrine honoring Puteri Raden Mas Ayu, a sixteenth-century Javanese princess. This site reveals an unexpected connection between local maritime history and distant Southeast Asian royalty that many visitors overlook.
