Clementi, planning area and residential town in Singapore
Clementi is a planning area in west Singapore with a mix of modern HDB residential blocks and private homes. The area is shaped by the wide Clementi Road and features a major transport hub with an MRT station, shopping centers like Clementi Mall, and several nearby parks.
The area was originally known as Sussex Estate and housed British military families during colonial times. After Colombo Camp closed in the late 1970s, the government transformed it into a modern residential town with HDB flats and public facilities.
The name Clementi honors Sir Cecil Clementi, a British colonial official whose influence shaped Singapore's early development. Today, the area's cultural diversity is visible in the temples, mosques, and churches that serve the many communities living here.
The area is easily reached by MRT and features wide streets accessible for walking and cycling. Proximity to Clementi Mall and several parks makes it convenient to get around and complete errands or spend time outdoors.
A notable steel railway bridge crosses the Sungei Ulu Pandan, a historic relic from when trains carried goods between Singapore and Malaysia. Built starting in the 1960s, it now serves as a striking landmark that connects the past to the present and attracts visitors for photography and exploration.
