Gillman Barracks, Contemporary art complex in Kent Ridge, Singapore
Gillman Barracks is a contemporary art complex in Kent Ridge housing multiple galleries, exhibition spaces, and dining venues within restored military structures. The site spans about six hectares and combines various art spaces with food and drink options in one location.
British soldiers built these military quarters in 1936 as barracks for their troops. After a major transformation in 2012, the site became Singapore's center for contemporary visual arts.
The galleries exhibit work from both well-known and emerging artists across Southeast Asia, making it a key meeting point for contemporary creators in the region. You encounter art and exhibitions that reflect the artistic voices of these places.
You can reach the complex easily by taking the Circle Line to Labrador Park station, from which it is about a ten-minute walk to the site. The grounds are flat and easy to navigate, with plenty of time to explore the various galleries and linger in the restaurants.
The buildings date from the British military period and have kept their original colonial architecture. These historical shells now form an interesting contrast to the modern art displayed inside them.
