Khao Phing Kan, Limestone formation in Phang Nga Bay, Thailand.

Khao Phing Kan is an island in Phang Nga Bay composed of limestone with tall cliffs and dramatic rocky ridges rising from the water. The formation includes the distinctive narrow rock pinnacle Ko Tapu, which sits just offshore and is visible from multiple viewing angles.

The island formed through ancient geological processes when coral reef systems were submerged beneath the sea over millions of years. Constant erosion from water and weather gradually shaped the rock into its distinctive needle-like form that exists today.

The limestone rock holds meaning in local folklore, with fishermen sharing stories that have been passed down through generations about its origins. These tales remain part of how communities here understand their surrounding waters and landscape.

The island is surrounded by water and is best explored by boat tour departing from nearby ports in the area. Visit during the dry season from November through April when weather conditions are most favorable for water-based travel.

The location became famous worldwide after appearing in an action film from the 1970s, which brought it to the attention of cinema enthusiasts globally. This film appearance transformed the bay into one of Southeast Asia's most recognizable destinations.
