Ita Thao Pier, Pier in Nantou County, Taiwan
Ita Thao Pier is a boat landing on the shore of Sun Moon Lake in Yuchi Township, Taiwan, serving as the main point for boat trips across the water. The pier is simply built from wood and concrete with open waiting areas, nearby shops selling snacks and souvenirs, and benches facing the water and surrounding mountains.
The pier was rebuilt after a major earthquake and has since become part of the tourism development of Sun Moon Lake. During reconstruction, an octagonal pavilion and a boat-shaped visitor center were added, improving facilities for travelers.
Ita Thao village centers around its boating heritage, and the pier remains the gathering point where visitors and locals connect daily. You can see local crafts, taste traditional food, and observe traditional boats that shape daily life here and reveal how the community relates to the water.
It is best to arrive early to secure a good spot for the boat ride, especially on weekends and in warmer months when more visitors come. Weather can change significantly, so check the forecast before your visit to prepare for possible rain or storms that might affect boat schedules.
After sunset the pier becomes quiet and nearly empty as boats stop running, creating a completely different atmosphere from the busy daytime. The sky over the lake glows in soft colors, and many visitors stay behind to enjoy this peaceful moment by the water.
