Morehead State University, Public university in Morehead, Kentucky.
Morehead State University is a public university in Morehead, Kentucky that spreads across a wooded campus within the Daniel Boone National Forest and contains more than 50 buildings. The grounds include lecture halls, laboratories, dormitories, and administrative buildings connected by paved pathways and landscaped areas.
The institution started in 1887 as Morehead Normal School, a teacher training facility, and grew through several reorganizations over the decades. In 1966 it received university status, which expanded the range of degree programs offered.
The institution takes its name from James Turner Morehead, a former Kentucky governor whose family lived in the area. Today students use the open green spaces between buildings for studying or informal gatherings on warm afternoons.
The campus is accessible through several main entrances with signage that leads to parking areas and central facilities. Visitors should note that the grounds are hilly and comfortable footwear is recommended for walking between buildings.
The campus hosts the Craft Academy, a program that allows gifted high school students to take college level courses while still earning their diploma. They live in a dedicated building on the grounds and attend classes alongside other students.
