Wizard Island, Volcanic island in Crater Lake, Oregon, US
Wizard Island is a volcanic cone that rises about 764 feet above Crater Lake's surface in Oregon. The formation features steep sides and a crater at its summit known as the Witches Cauldron.
The island formed following Mount Mazama's eruption roughly 7,700 years ago as the caldera gradually filled with water. It developed over time through volcanic processes that may still be subtly active.
Native American tribes of the Pacific Northwest incorporated the formation of Crater Lake and Wizard Island into their traditional stories and beliefs.
Access to the island is available by boat during summer months from Cleetwood Cove on the lake's rim. Trails of varying difficulty lead to the summit and circle the crater at the top.
Most of the island's bulk lies hidden beneath the water's surface, with only about 2 percent visible above it. This means what you see while standing on top is just a small portion of its actual size.
