Fort Brooklyn

Fort Brooklyn, 18th-century military fortification in Brooklyn Heights, United States.

Fort Brooklyn was a large square fortification with corner bastions located at what is now Clark Street and Columbia Heights in Brooklyn Heights. The structure contained barracks, storerooms, and magazines designed to house and supply a substantial military garrison.

British forces built this fortification in May 1780 to maintain control over Brooklyn during the American Revolutionary War. Following the war's end, the structure was dismantled as the area transitioned into a residential neighborhood.

This location represents a key moment when Brooklyn transformed from a rural settlement into a contested military zone during wartime. The place remains tied to how New Yorkers understand their city's role in the nation's early struggles.

A historical marker from 1924 at Clark Street and Columbia Heights pinpoints where the fort once stood. Visitors can easily explore the area on foot and walk the surrounding streets to visualize the former military installation's location.

Each corner of the structure featured a separate bastion with its own magazines for ammunition and supplies, creating a four-point defense system. This design allowed the garrison to fortify and control Brooklyn from multiple strategic positions simultaneously.
