Lyric Theatre, Broadway theatre in Times Square, Manhattan, United States
The Lyric Theatre is a Broadway playhouse at 214 West 43rd Street in Manhattan with seating for 1,622 people. The venue combines a restored historic exterior facade with a modern interior spread across multiple levels of balconies and boxes.
The theatre opened in 1998 and merged architectural pieces from two earlier buildings, the Apollo and the original Lyric, into a single new structure. In 2018 it underwent a 33 million dollar renovation to accommodate the staging of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
The building takes its name from one of the two original theatres that once stood on this site, preserving a facade from before the reconstruction. Visitors can spot remnants of old architecture integrated into the modern structure as they walk through the lobbies.
The theatre sits near the 42nd Street subway station and offers elevator service along with wheelchair access at multiple entrances. Several bars on different floors open before the show and during intermission.
The stage can be divided into multiple areas to show scenes happening in different rooms at the same time. This flexibility was designed specifically for productions that require several playing spaces within the same performance.
