Times Square Theater, Former Broadway theater in Times Square, Manhattan, US

The Times Square Theater occupies a site on West 42nd Street with a limestone exterior and a central colonnade defining its symmetrical design. Inside, the auditorium was laid out in a fan shape and adorned with silver, green, and black finishes featuring Empire-style decorative elements.

The building opened in 1920 as a live performance venue designed by Eugene De Rosa. By 1934 it had transitioned to showing films for cinema audiences throughout Manhattan.

The theater was a gathering place where Broadway audiences experienced live performances during the early decades of the 20th century. After becoming a cinema, it served Manhattan moviegoers looking for entertainment in the heart of Times Square.

The location on West 42nd Street offers good access via public transit serving the Times Square area. Visitors should expect the surroundings to be crowded and active throughout the day.

The original construction incorporated an air cushion system designed to reduce street noise from the busy Times Square surroundings. This engineering solution was an innovative response to the area's constant urban activity.
