Patapsco Valley State Park, State park and nature reserve along Patapsco River in Maryland, US.
Patapsco Valley State Park is a nature reserve and state park along the Patapsco River, extending through Anne Arundel County, Howard County, and Baltimore County in Maryland. The area includes eight recreational zones with hiking trails, cycling routes, camping sites, and access points to the riverbank, connected by a network of paths.
The park was founded in 1907 to protect the river valleys and natural landscape along the Patapsco. Traces of old railroad lines and 19th-century bridges recall the time when this area served as an important transportation corridor for the region.
The name comes from the Patapsco River, whose designation traces back to the Algonquian language of the original inhabitants. Today, hikers and cyclists from across the region use the trails through forests and along the banks, while families visit picnic areas and water spots for outings.
Multiple entrances across the three counties provide access to different parts of the area, with each zone offering its own parking and facilities. Trails vary in length and difficulty, allowing for both short riverside walks and longer journeys through the hills.
Some sections of the riverbank still show old stone pillars and mill foundations that once harnessed the water power of the Patapsco. In quiet spots, herons and occasionally beavers can be observed searching for food in the shallow shoreline zones.
