Savage Neck Dunes Natural Area Preserve, Protected coastal area in Northampton County, Virginia, United States.
Savage Neck Dunes Natural Area Preserve is a protected coastal area in Northampton County, Virginia, spanning 298 acres with sand dunes up to 50 feet tall along a mile of Chesapeake Bay shoreline. The landscape includes maritime forests and a freshwater pond set back from the dunes.
The area takes its name from Thomas Savage, a young interpreter who arrived in Virginia in 1608 and received a large land grant from Debedeavon, a leader of the Accomac people. This early connection between colonial settlers and indigenous peoples shaped the region's past.
The preserve maintains three marked trails with educational signs that inform visitors about the local ecosystem and natural heritage.
The parking area accommodates about eight vehicles, so arriving early is wise, particularly on weekends. Check tide charts before your visit since beach access depends on water levels.
The preserve shelters the largest population of northeastern beach tiger beetles, rare insects that hunt during the day and rest buried under sand at night. These specialized insects depend on the dune ecosystem's unique conditions.
