Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge
Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge, Wildlife refuge at Northampton County, United States.
The Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge is a protected coastal area containing 1,200 acres of salt marshes, grasslands, pine forests, barrier islands, and fresh and brackish water ponds. The Visitor Center features twelve educational exhibits about local wildlife and includes an indoor observation deck.
The refuge was established in 1984 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to preserve a critical stopover along the Atlantic migration route. This purpose connected habitat protection to the needs of birds traveling between continents.
This place serves as a learning center for wildlife conservation, where visitors discover local ecosystems through interactive displays and guided observation programs. The facility teaches practical knowledge about habitat protection and why wetlands matter to migrating species.
Visit in autumn months to experience the largest wildlife activity, when millions of songbirds and thousands of raptors pass through the area. Binoculars and coastal-weather-appropriate clothing enhance observation and make the experience more rewarding.
Every autumn, millions of songbirds and monarch butterflies cross the refuge while heading south over the Chesapeake Bay. This gathering of countless species in one location creates an unforgettable experience for visitors.
