Almshouse Farm at Machipongo
Almshouse Farm at Machipongo, Historic almshouse farm in Machipongo, United States.
Almshouse Farm at Machipongo is a historic property featuring Greek Revival architecture, including a two-story main building erected in 1883 with eight rooms on the lower floor and thirteen guest rooms upstairs. The site encompasses multiple structures from different periods set across the extensive grounds.
William and Grace Eyre donated about 51 acres of their estate to the county in 1803 to establish a public almshouse. The property developed over the next century and a half into a facility providing aid to those in need.
The buildings still show separate living areas that once housed white and African American residents in divided quarters. This physical layout tells the story of how social divisions shaped daily life on the property.
The site now functions as a museum and cultural center open to visitors for educational programs, workshops, and events. The buildings are generally accessible, and visitors should ask staff about guided tours or specific events happening during their visit.
The oldest building on the grounds is the Quarter Kitchen, constructed around 1804 and later expanded with a wooden addition in 1844. This small kitchen structure provides insight into how work spaces were built and used in that era.
