Charlotte metropolitan area, Metropolitan statistical area in North and South Carolina, US.
Charlotte metropolitan area is a metropolitan region that spreads across parts of North Carolina and South Carolina and covers several cities and suburbs. It covers a broad territory of over 3000 square miles (7770 square kilometers) and is crossed by Interstate Highway 85 and Interstate 77, which connect the center with rural communities.
The region grew rapidly after the American Civil War through textile mills and later through the rise of banking in the 20th century. Many small towns expanded into suburbs as the economy shifted from farming to industry and eventually to financial services.
Families often visit the parks and trails along the Catawba River on weekends, where they picnic and walk through wooded areas. The region draws many professionals who work in the tall office buildings and enjoy dining and breweries in the surrounding towns after hours.
Most places are easiest to reach by car, as public transit outside the downtown core is limited. Highways run through the entire area and connect the individual communities with one another.
Charlotte Douglas International Airport ranks among the largest airports in the world by passenger traffic and serves as a major hub. The region hosts the second-largest banking center in the United States after New York City.
