Current River State Park, State park in Shannon County, Missouri
Current River State Park is a 1,200-acre (486-hectare) protected area along the Current River with two small lakes, wooded sections, and approximately 9 miles (14 km) of hiking trails. The property includes historic structures from the 1930s that were part of a former corporate retreat facility.
The land began as the Alton Club in the 1930s, serving as a private retreat for executives of the Alton Box Board Company. It transitioned to state park status in 2008 and the buildings gained recognition on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.
The historic buildings reflect how wealthy business leaders once used private retreats to conduct corporate affairs during the mid-20th century. Visitors can observe how these spaces were designed to blend work and leisure in a natural setting.
The park is open during warmer months, primarily on weekends, with picnic areas and fishing available throughout the grounds. Guided tours of the historic buildings and self-guided hiking are the main activities visitors enjoy.
The park preserves buildings from the 1930s designed according to National Park Service architectural standards of that era. These structures represent rare surviving examples of early corporate resort design that most visitors overlook.
