Skulpturenpark Zollverein, Sculpture garden at Zollverein industrial complex, Essen, Germany.
The Skulpturenpark Zollverein is a sculpture garden on the grounds of a former mine in Essen where contemporary artworks are displayed outdoors. The sculptures are distributed along paths that wind between old industrial structures that shape the site.
After mining ended in the 1980s, the site began its transformation into an art space. The project grew from the idea of reviving the historic location and preserving it from abandonment.
The park displays works by international artists who engage with the site's industrial past. Visitors experience how contemporary art and the mining heritage connect with each other.
The site is laid out generously and can be explored on foot with well-marked paths to help orient yourself. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since the routes are lengthy and the terrain can be uneven.
A notable artwork consists of 24 massive granite blocks arranged in a geometric form as an installation. These blocks were intentionally positioned to protect the area from an unwanted use.
