Königsstuhl National Park Centre, Tourism information center in Sassnitz, Germany.
Königsstuhl National Park Centre is a visitor center in Sassnitz, on the island of Rügen, dedicated to the chalk cliffs and coastal landscape of Jasmund National Park. It spans several floors and includes aquariums, reconstructed ice age environments, and displays covering the plants and animals of the area.
The center opened in 2004 on the grounds of a 19th-century hotel that once welcomed tourists drawn by the chalk cliffs. The shift from hospitality to conservation on this same site shows how the purpose of the place changed over roughly 150 years.
The name "Königsstuhl" refers to the tallest chalk stack on the island, which drew painters and poets in the 19th century and became a symbol of the German Romantic movement. The center keeps this connection alive by showing how the cliffs have shaped the way people here see and talk about the natural world.
The building is accessible for visitors with limited mobility and offers audio guides and sign language support on request. Allow at least half a day if you want to go through all the exhibition areas without rushing.
The center runs a panoramic cinema showing films about the natural and human history of the region, which is a less common feature for a nature center of this type. An outdoor trail extends the indoor experience by placing visitors directly in the landscape they have just learned about.
