Wasseralm, Mountain hut in Berchtesgaden Alps, Germany.
Wasseralm is a mountain hut in the Berchtesgaden Alps, set between the Hagen Mountains and the Steinernes Meer plateau. It offers basic dormitory accommodation and sits at a point where several hiking trails meet, making it a natural stop for walkers crossing this part of the Alps.
The hut was first built to support farming on the high pastures, sheltering herders and their animals through the summer months. Over time, as hiking became more common in the Berchtesgaden region, it took on its current role as a place to sleep and eat for walkers.
The hut keeps the tradition of Alpine farming alive, with animals grazing the high pastures in summer and dairy products made on the spot. Guests share meals at long tables with other walkers, which is a common practice in mountain huts across this part of Bavaria.
Booking ahead is strongly recommended, especially in summer when demand is high and beds fill quickly. Visitors need to bring their own sleeping bag, as bedding is not available at the hut.
In winter, the hut sits along a demanding ski touring route that connects Jenner, the Hagen Mountains, and Wimbachtal in a single traverse. The route is not marked and requires solid experience in route-finding on snow.
