Ankoku-ji, 14th-century Buddhist temple in Kunisaki, Japan.

Ankoku-ji is a Buddhist temple in Kunisaki set within woodland surroundings on elevated ground. The complex includes multiple buildings organized around a central area, featuring an octagonal sutra storehouse built in the 15th century that houses thousands of ancient Buddhist texts.

The temple was founded in 1347 during the Ashikaga period as part of a nationwide network of 68 temples created to support national stability. This established its early role as a significant religious institution across the country.

The temple remains an active center for Zen Buddhist practice, where monks carry out daily meditation and rituals in the quiet halls. Visitors can observe how this spiritual routine shapes the pace of life in the compound.

The temple grounds are open from sunrise to sunset year-round and situated within forest, so wear comfortable shoes and bring weather protection. The octagonal sutra storehouse requires time to visit properly, so plan accordingly for a thorough experience.

In autumn months, the grounds transform with red azaleas creating a colorful landscape, anchored by a central shrub over 150 years old. This seasonal change draws many visitors specifically coming to see this natural display.
