Ankoku-ji, 14th-century Buddhist temple in Kunisaki, Japan.
The temple complex features an octagonal sutra storehouse from 1408 containing over 2,000 ancient Buddhist texts brought from Ming dynasty China.
Built in 1347 during the Ashikaga shogunate period, Ankoku-ji belonged to a network of 68 temples established across Japan to maintain national stability.
The temple serves as a center for Zen Buddhist practices within the Daitoku-ji branch of the Rinzai School, preserving traditional meditation techniques.
The temple provides guided tours of the sutra repository for 500 yen, with access available from sunrise to sunset throughout the year.
During autumn, the temple grounds display numerous dodan-tsutsuji shrubs, including a 160-year-old central bush that attracts 30,000 seasonal visitors.
