Kasugano stable, Sumo training stable in Ryōgoku, Japan.
Kasugano stable is a sumo training facility in Ryōgoku, Tokyo, where aspiring wrestlers practice daily under experienced guidance. The premises include a multi-level building with a practice ring, living quarters, and facilities for the shared life of the athletes.
Established in the mid-18th century by Kasugano Gunpachi, the stable remained inactive for decades until referee Kimura Soshiro revived it during the Meiji period. The facility passed through multiple leadership changes and restructurings over the following generations.
Wrestlers here carry ring names beginning with the character 栃 (tochi), linking them to earlier stable owners. This naming tradition remains a visible sign of belonging and lineage within the sumo community today.
Morning practice sessions take place on weekdays and visitors can watch from a designated viewing area. Ryōgoku Station on the Sōbu Line is a short walk away, and the quiet atmosphere requires appropriate behavior during training.
Between 1967 and November 2023, the facility maintained at least one wrestler in the top makuuchi division without interruption, a noteworthy achievement spanning over five decades. This continuity reflects the long-term quality of training and talent development.
