Michinoku stable, Sumo training facility in Sumida, Tokyo, Japan
Michinoku Stable was a training facility for sumo wrestlers in Sumida, a part of Tokyo. The facility combined living quarters with a large practice area where wrestlers trained under the guidance of a former fighter.
The facility was founded in 1974 by Hoshikabuto, who had competed as a maegashira. After 50 years of operation, it closed in April 2024 and all wrestlers moved to other training locations.
The stable maintains traditional Japanese sumo practices, including morning training routines, communal living arrangements, and structured hierarchical relationships among wrestlers.
Visitors can observe morning training sessions from designated areas, following specific protocols and maintaining silence during practice to respect the athletes.
The facility absorbed all members of Izutsu Stable in 2019, including yokozuna Kakuryū. At that time, the place reached its largest roster with 15 active wrestlers.
