Lake Yuriria, Artificial lake in Guanajuato, Mexico.
Lake Yuriria extends across 7,200 hectares in central Mexico with a maximum depth of 2.6 meters, connecting to the Lerma River through a canal system.
In 1548, Friar Diego de Chávez directed the construction of a canal linking the Lerma River to Lake Yuriria, marking one of colonial America's first hydraulic projects.
The name Yuriria comes from Yuririapundaro in the Purépecha language, referring to the location as the place of the blood lake in pre-Hispanic times.
The reservoir provides irrigation water to surrounding agricultural fields through a network of channels, supporting local farming communities throughout the dry season.
The lake houses 142 bird species, including red-tailed hawks and American white pelicans, leading to its designation as a Ramsar wetland of international importance.
