Democracy Square, Urban park in Historic Centre of Lima, Peru
Democracy Square is an urban park featuring a central monolith and open gathering spaces in central Lima. The site sits one block away from Plaza San Martín and University Park, offering broad areas for people to gather and walk through.
The space emerged after a fire in 2000 destroyed the Bank of the Nation building during the Four Quarters March. It was inaugurated in 2006, converting the cleared site into a public gathering place.
The square hosts book fairs and public gatherings where people come together to share ideas and discuss civic matters. This active use reflects how the space embodies values of open dialogue in the city's daily life.
The square is located on Nicolás de Piérola Avenue and sits in front of the National Jury of Elections building with easy access from multiple transit routes. The flat, open design makes it accessible for visitors of all ages and mobility levels.
The square occupies the site of a building designed by architect Enrique Seoane Ros, which was destroyed in the 2000 fire. This transformation from a financial building to an open public space represents a shift in how this corner of the city is used.
