La Casona de San Marcos, Colonial cultural center in Historic Center, Lima, Peru
La Casona de San Marcos is a building complex in downtown Lima featuring multiple courtyards and Baroque and Rococo architectural details from the 1600s. The structure contains several galleries and museums focused on art, archaeology, and regional heritage collections.
The structure originated as a Jesuit novitiate for San Antonio Abad before being converted into the Convictorio de San Carlos. It later became part of San Marcos University, where it continues to serve as a cultural and academic hub.
The name reflects its deep connection to San Marcos University. Today, the spaces host exhibitions and cultural events that bring together art, archaeology, and folklore from across the region.
The complex sits in the historic downtown area and is easily accessible on foot from the main plaza. Note that certain sections may be restricted during events, so checking current opening hours ahead of your visit is helpful.
The art museum holds Peru's largest collection of portraits spanning from the 1500s to today. This gallery also displays contemporary and folk works that many visitors tend to overlook.
