Panteón de los Próceres, National museum in Lima, Peru

The Panteón de los Próceres occupies a former Jesuit church in Lima and holds a crypt containing the remains of 24 independence heroes. The interior preserves original altars and memorial monuments dedicated to these figures.

Built as a Jesuit church, the structure survived the 1746 earthquake that devastated Lima. The church later became part of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos before being converted into its current memorial function.

The name refers to those who led the nation toward independence, honored within these walls. Murals by José Sabogal serve as visual tributes to these figures and their significance.

Access is through Parque Universitario and the interior is open daily. Wear sturdy shoes as floors may be uneven, and dress respectfully for this memorial space.

The baroque altar made from Ecuadorean mahogany dates to the 1500s and has remained intact over the centuries. This artwork is among the few original elements from the church's earliest days.
