Edificio Rímac, Beaux-Arts palace in Lima, Peru
The Edificio Rímac is a four-story Beaux-Arts palace adorned with French architectural elements including arcades, garlands, medallions, and pilasters across its facade. The structure occupies prominent street frontage along Roosevelt Avenue and the Jirones Carabaya and Unión in Lima's historic center.
The structure was completed in 1924 by Polish architect Ricardo de Jaxa Malachowski during Lima's construction boom under President Augusto B. Leguía. This period marked an intense phase of modernization in the capital.
This structure represented Peru's first multi-family apartment building, housing 69 residential units that gave inhabitants direct street-level access. The design showed a new way for urban residents to live together in the city.
The building sits near Plaza San Martín in Lima's historic center and is easily accessible by public transportation. The best views of the ornate facade can be found from Roosevelt Avenue, where all the architectural details are clearly visible.
Three interior courtyards supply the apartments with natural light and ventilation, reflecting thoughtful design for residents' wellbeing. The building also features one of Lima's first Otis elevators, a remarkable technical achievement for its era.
