Monument to Miguel Grau, Naval memorial in Plaza Grau, Lima, Peru
The Monument to Miguel Grau is a granite and bronze structure standing in Plaza Grau, in the Lima District. It takes the form of a four-sided tower topped by a statue of the Admiral in dress uniform, surrounded by sculptural figures and maritime ornamentation.
The memorial was designed by Spanish sculptor Victorio Macho and unveiled on October 28, 1946, during the presidency of José Luis Bustamante y Rivero. It honors the Admiral for his role in the War of the Pacific in the 19th century.
The monument shows figures climbing upward, representing the dedication of naval personnel. Anchors, ship wheels, and other maritime elements surround the central statue, connecting the work to Peru's seafaring traditions.
The monument stands at the center of Plaza Grau, a large traffic circle where several main avenues meet. It is easy to reach on foot and can be viewed from all sides by walking around the open square.
A survivor of the gunboat Huascar attended the 1946 unveiling ceremony and pulled back the covering himself. His presence at the event was a direct, living link to the battle in which he had served.
