Pine Brook Covered Bridge, Historic covered bridge in Waitsfield, US
Pine Brook Covered Bridge is a wooden crossing over Pine Brook on North Road that spans about 48 feet. The structure has vertical wooden siding, a steel beam foundation under the deck, and a metal roof.
The bridge was built in 1872 and is one of only two surviving 19th-century covered bridges remaining in Waitsfield. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
The bridge shows how 19th-century builders in New England used timber and stone to create lasting structures. Visitors walking through can see the craftsmanship in the wooden framework and stonework that has endured for generations.
The roadway is a single-lane passage with a weight limit of 5 tons for vehicles, so modern heavy vehicles cannot safely cross. Visitors on foot can walk through at any time without restrictions.
The bridge uses two upright logs positioned in the streambed to help support the center of the wooden framework, a structural detail you rarely see in other bridges. This unusual reinforcement approach gives it a distinctive appearance that visitors often notice when standing below.
