Umbrella Girl, Bronze sculpture in Schiller Park, Columbus, US
The copper fountain features a young girl in motion holding an umbrella above an octagonal sandstone pool within the Grace Highfield Memorial Garden.
Originally installed in 1872 as a statue of Hebe, the goddess of youth, the current Umbrella Girl was created by Joan Wobst in 1996 after the first version disappeared.
The statue depicts a child wearing a traditional German dirndl dress, reflecting the German heritage of the neighborhood where Schiller Park is located.
Visitors can find the Umbrella Girl at 1069 Jaeger Street in German Village, where students gather to study and children throw pennies into the pool.
Each December, an unknown community member places a red cloak on the statue, creating a winter tradition that continues for more than a decade.
