Statue of Friedrich Schiller, Bronze statue in Schiller Park, Columbus, United States
The Statue of Friedrich Schiller is a bronze representation of the celebrated German poet positioned at the center of a 23-acre park with detailed sculptural features and an upright stance. The work originates from a Munich workshop and was cast as a second reproduction of the original model.
The monument was designed by Max von Widnmann, a German artist, and created as a second cast of his original work from his hometown. It was installed in the park on July 4, 1891, and has remained a lasting symbol of German-American cultural connection since then.
The statue depicts Schiller in a pose that honors his role as a major writer, drawing German-American visitors who explore their connection to an important part of their cultural roots. The park itself serves as a space where this community's history appears through art and the arrangement of its grounds.
The monument stands at the center of the park between Reinhard Avenue and East Deshler Avenue, where visitors have access throughout the year. The location is easy to reach and offers plenty of space around it for viewing and photography.
In 2012, special lighting systems were installed to make the details of the monument clearly visible after sunset. This modern addition keeps the 19th-century work visible and accessible to visitors even during darker months.
