Madagascar: A Crate Adventure, Water ride at Universal Studios Singapore, Singapore
Madagascar: A Crate Adventure is a water ride at Universal Studios Singapore where boats glide through several indoor scenes recreating animated film sequences. The vessels move without tracks, carried solely by the water current, passing through different sets with screens and moving figures.
The installation opened in May 2011 after the original concept of a trackless safari ride was abandoned. During planning, the studio decided on a water-driven system that follows the film narrative more closely.
The name refers to the wooden crates in which the film characters travel from New York to Africa, recreated here as the shape of the boats. Throughout the journey, guests hear dialogue and music from the DreamWorks film while life-size replicas of the animals stand or move along the banks.
The journey lasts around eight minutes and passes through enclosed areas with low lighting and occasional water splashes. Each boat seats up to twenty people in five rows with bamboo-style safety bars.
The vessels are steered by underwater wheels that gently shift direction without guests noticing any visible mechanism. In one part of the journey, the film characters appear on large screens instead of as three-dimensional replicas.
