Belimbing Rice Terraces, Agricultural terraces in Belimbing, Bali, Indonesia.

The Belimbing Rice Terraces are agricultural platforms that cascade down hillsides near Mount Batukaru, connected by an extensive water distribution network. The green platforms are built in layers, allowing water to flow efficiently through the whole landscape.

These rice fields show agricultural practices that developed over approximately two thousand years through multiple generations of Balinese farmers. They progressively shaped the mountainous terrain into a productive farming system.

The Subak irrigation system reflects the Tri Hita Karana philosophy, integrating water management with religious practices and community cooperation. The rice fields function as sacred spaces where spiritual and practical community life unfolds each day.

Early morning visits between April and October offer clear views of the terraces, while sturdy walking shoes are necessary for the uneven paths. The ground can become slippery after rain, so it is wise to check conditions before setting out.

Alongside the rice fields, local farmers cultivate coffee, cacao, and clove plants, enriching the landscape with diverse crops. This mixture shows how the community diversifies the land to support their livelihoods.
