Belmond Hotel das Cataratas, hotel in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil
Belmond Hotel das Cataratas is a hotel inside Iguazu Falls National Park in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, with rooms decorated in a Portuguese colonial style. It is the only lodging within the park boundaries, sitting just a short walk from the waterfalls themselves.
Construction began in the 1940s under President Getúlio Vargas, and the hotel opened in 1958 after nearly two decades of work. It was conceived from the start as the only lodging inside the national park, a status that has remained unchanged.
The hotel is the only building inside the national park, and its pink facade stands out clearly against the surrounding forest. Guests can walk to the falls directly from the hotel grounds, without passing through the main park entrance.
Because the hotel sits inside the national park, guests do not need to purchase a park entry ticket to access the walking trails to the falls. For visits to the Brazilian or Argentine sides of the waterfalls, a ride to the main entrance is still required.
Hotel guests can walk to the falls in the early morning before the trails open to the public, which allows for very rare encounters with wildlife along the path. On full moon nights, the hotel offers guided walks where a lunar rainbow can sometimes be seen over the water.
