Parque provincial Cruce Caballero, Natural reserve in Misiones, Argentina
This reserve covers a large forested area with old Araucaria trees and tree ferns in a humid subtropical climate. Trails take visitors through different layers of forest, from ground-level plants to tall tree canopies above.
The protected area was established in the final decades of the 20th century to preserve remaining Atlantic Forest that had been lost in earlier decades. Conservation efforts grew from recognition that native forest was disappearing rapidly across the region.
This place matters to people who care about protecting forests and native plants. Visitors experience how the natural world reveals itself through old trees, plants, and sounds when walking through the reserve.
Visitors need a vehicle with good ground clearance to reach the site, especially when soil conditions are wet. Basic facilities exist including simple cooking areas and water showers, but prepare for rustic conditions.
A rare woodpecker species found in only a few locations lives here today. This forest also holds one of the country's last significant stands of native Araucaria woodland, offering a glimpse of a forest type that has nearly vanished elsewhere.
