SS Wollongbar, Historical steamship wreck site near Byron Bay, Australia

The SS Wollongbar was a passenger steamship that operated along the New South Wales coast in the early 1900s. The vessel served coastal transport routes for over a decade before it met its end during stormy weather.

The ship entered service in 1911 and was destroyed by a gale off Byron Bay in 1921. Following the wreck, the vessel's remains were broken up and salvaged.

The vessel represented a critical link in the maritime transportation network of New South Wales during the early 20th century.

The remains lie in coastal waters and are not easily accessible today as they sit underwater. Visitors can learn about the wreck through museums and memorials located near Byron Bay.

The vessel fell victim to the dangerous conditions common along this coast where storms can appear suddenly. The accident prompted regional maritime authorities to revise their safety standards for ships operating in the area.
