Shankh Monastery, Buddhist monastery in Uvurkhangai Province, Mongolia
The monastery stands 25 kilometers southeast of Kharkhorin, featuring a central temple with traditional Mongolian Buddhist architectural elements and detailed murals.
Founded in 1647 by Zanabazar, the first Jebtsundamba Khutuktu, the monastery survived the 1937 Stalinist purges when five monks maintained its practices in secret.
The main temple contains seven Kalachakra Mandalas depicting 722 deities, representing the most complete collection of these sacred images in Mongolia.
Visitors can reach the monastery by road from Kharkhorin, with local accommodations available in neighboring communities throughout the touring season.
The monastery held Genghis Khan's black military banner, making it a central location for both religious practices and historical Mongolian artifacts.
