The Ministry of Environment and Green Development established Ikh Bogd Uul National Park in 2008 to protect the southeastern section of the Altai Mountains.

The park incorporates traditional Mongolian nomadic territories where local communities maintain their ancestral practices of seasonal livestock grazing.

Visitors can access the park through organized tours from Bayankhongor city, with the best hiking conditions occurring between June and September.

The park contains Tergun-Bogd peak, reaching 3,957 meters in elevation, making it the highest point in the Gobi-Altai mountain range.
