Satemwa Tea Estate, Tea plantation in Thyolo, Malawi
The Satemwa Tea Estate spans across the Shire Highlands, producing various types of tea at an altitude between 1000 and 1200 meters above sea level.
Scottish pioneer Maclean Kay established the estate in 1923, purchasing land from a tobacco farmer and transforming it into the first commercial tea plantation in Africa.
The estate employs 800 local workers and supports 10,000 community members through sustainable farming practices and educational programs for regional agricultural development.
Visitors can explore tea production methods through guided tours of the estate, stay at Huntingdon House, and participate in tea tasting sessions.
The estate maintains independence from large agribusinesses, operating as a family-run enterprise that produces specialized artisanal teas including green, white, oolong, and black varieties.
