Litovelské Pomoraví Protected Landscape Area, Protected landscape area in Olomouc Region, Czech Republic
Litovelské Pomoraví is a protected landscape area between Olomouc and Mohelnice, featuring an inland river delta and extensive floodplain forests along the Morava. The area's river branches create a complex network that supports rare plants and animals in undisturbed wetland forests.
The area received protected status in 1990 through the efforts of environmentalists led by hydrobiologist Professor Otakar Štěrba, who recognized its ecological importance. This designation became a crucial step in safeguarding the river landscape and its habitats for future generations.
The Mladeč Caves in the northern section show traces of early human settlement, and visitors can see how people have long lived in connection with this fertile landscape.
The area can be explored through several educational trails, including the Třesín Trail, the Nové Zámky Romantic Area Trail, and the Litovel Floodplain Trail. Wear sturdy shoes, as paths can become muddy during wetter seasons.
Archaeological finds suggest people lived in the Mladeč Caves during the Stone Age, making this one of Europe's oldest known dwelling sites. These early traces remain visible and continue to be studied today.
