Olomouc Region, Administrative region in northeastern Czech Republic
Olomouc Region covers a large territory in the northeastern part of the country with mountain landscapes in its northern section and flat farmland in its southern area. It stretches across five districts where forested slopes, agricultural fields, and mid-sized towns alternate with one another.
The current administrative unit came into being in 2000 as part of a nationwide reform that distributed powers to several newly created regions. Before this reorganization, the territory was divided into other territorial structures that partly dated back to the period before 1989.
The university city forms an academic center for young people from different parts of Czechia and abroad, who gather in lecture halls, cafés, and green spaces across the town center. Several spa towns in the northern part welcome visitors seeking rest in mineral springs known for their healing properties for centuries.
Visitors can expect short distances between settlements in the southern part, while the northern section requires longer drives through valleys and mountain roads. Small shops, walking trails, and local markets can be found in many communities, even outside the main city.
Some visitors hardly notice that they cross between historic regions: Moravia in the larger area and a narrow Silesian strip to the north. The highest peaks offer views into three neighboring countries on clear days, a fact hikers often realize only once they reach the summit.
