Tom Yarbrough opened Tom's Sunset Casino on August 2, 1989, with over 240 slot machines and a restaurant. It closed on January 12, 1998, after competition from the nearby Sunset Station cut monthly profits from $650,000 to $275,000. John Woodrum bought the property at a foreclosure auction for $1.4 million in September 1998 and reopened it as the Klondike Sunset Casino on October 1, 1999, after a $5 million renovation.

The casino's name comes from John Woodrum's Klondike Hotel and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip, to which it was a sister property. Woodrum, who bought the closed Tom's Sunset Casino at a 1998 foreclosure auction for $1.4 million, chose not to add a hotel and aimed the place at Henderson locals, drawing them with coupons for free food and drinks.
