Jesse M. Unruh State Office Building, Government office building in Sacramento, United States.
The Jesse M. Unruh State Office Building is a government office structure in Sacramento featuring a distinctive south-facing facade. Verses from Sam Walter Foss's poem are carved into the stone exterior of this side.
The structure was completed in 1928 by the architecture firm Weeks and Day, representing a major administrative hub of its time. It received its current name in 1987 in honor of California politician Jesse M. Unruh.
The building houses various state offices and reflects how California government operations were organized in the early 1900s. Inside, you can see the layout and design that once defined how state work was conducted.
The building sits at 915 Capitol Mall and is managed by the California Department of General Services. You can visit during regular state office hours to see the interior and the carved stonework.
The building gained attention around 2008 for needing significant interior upgrades to address aging conditions throughout the structure. These renovation efforts highlighted how state buildings sometimes require substantial updates to remain functional.
