Federal Building

The Edward R. Roybal Federal Building is a courthouse in downtown Los Angeles housing courtrooms and offices for federal judges and staff across multiple floors. The structure occupies a full city block and features limestone and granite facades typical of 1930s architecture.

The building was constructed in 1933 as part of a federal public works initiative during economic hardship. It emerged from the government's effort to develop Los Angeles as a major center for federal law and administration.

The building serves as a central location for federal judicial proceedings, housing the United States District Court for the Central District of California.

Expect security screening similar to airport procedures and bring valid identification when visiting. Weekday visits during regular business hours offer the best chance to see the courthouse in operation.

The building blends functional courthouse design with Art Deco artistic details, including ornamental stonework at its entrances that is still visible today. These decorative elements transform the structure from a simple administrative space into a work with visual character.
