Canyon Diablo Bridge
Canyon Diablo Bridge, Historic bridge in Winona, Arizona
The Canyon Diablo Bridge is a concrete arch structure that spans across a canyon with a cantilevered roadway system. The design uses a reinforced arch approach typical of bridges built during this era.
The structure was built in 1915 by the Topeka Bridge & Iron Company as part of an emerging road network. It arose during a time when the United States was creating new connections across difficult terrain.
The structure shows how early motorization shaped the region and connected communities together. It reveals how transportation routes changed everyday life for people across northern Arizona.
The bridge is located along the former Route 66 corridor and is accessible from Interstate 40. The site offers views of the canyon and surrounding landscape from the roadway.
The structure features special flood control elements with a solid wall on the upstream side and a slotted wall on the downstream side. This design helped the bridge withstand heavy rains and water surges.
