Homolovi State Park, Archaeological site and state park in Winslow, United States.
The park contains over 300 archaeological sites spread along the Little Colorado River, featuring the remains of ancient pueblos, rock carvings, and artifacts from Hopi occupation. Multiple mounds rise along the river where these past communities left their marks on the landscape.
Several pueblo communities grew between 1260 and 1400, forming a network of settlements with some structures containing up to 1200 rooms. This flourishing period ended when residents eventually left the region and relocated elsewhere.
The name Homolovi comes from the Hopi language meaning "place of the little hills," showing the deep connection between this site and Hopi people. You can see how the landscape itself reflects this heritage when you walk through the park.
The park offers trails for walking, a visitor center with exhibits, and guided programs throughout the year. Plan for several hours to explore, and bring water since the area is exposed and can be warm.
Residents grew cotton here and traded their harvest for pottery and other goods with Hopi communities at the mesas. These trading routes show how connected the different pueblos were across the region.
